The Great Barrier Reef is the first thing most people
visualize when they think of Australias Tropical North. But since 1991 it
has also been home to a gallery dedicated to the work of Australian artist
Dorothy Gauvin (pronounced as Go-Van.)
A big canvas painter, Gauvin developed a unique montage style to
capture the vast scope of the Outback and add the dimension of time to the
stories in her pictures. Her research is as meticulous as the detail she
lavishes on her scenes of life on the cattle station and the drovers
track, bush pub or crowded city street.
A friendly space, the gallery is air-conditioned and on the ground floor of
an arcade in the very heart of downtown Cairns. We offer a range of
experience to browsers and buyers and the artwork is a surprising alternative
to the expected type of subject.
Apart from the originals on display, youll find books of Bush poetry
colourfully illustrated by Gauvin, small framed prints, large Limited
Editions and much more. These make quality souvenirs of your visit and gifts
to take home. On Fridays, you can meet Gauvin and ask her to personally
inscribe your book purchases.
