Electric Guitars
Throughout the twenties and
thirties, guitarists began experimenting by attaching microphones to their
acoustic guitars to amplify the sound.
The majority of electric guitars
were hollow-bodied acoustic guitars with electric pickups. The problem was
that the hollow space inside the guitar created vibrations that caused
feedback.
Guitar companies began experimenting
with solid-body guitars in order to eliminate the problem of feedback. One
of the earliest solid-body guitars was an aluminum guitar that was
referred to as the "Pancake Guitar" or "Frying Pan".
In nineteen forty, Les Paul make an
attempt to create a solid-body guitar called the "log guitar,"
it was a plain post outfitted with a neck, pickups, and strings.
Electric guitars did not become a
commercial success until the 1950's, when Fender began selling its first
solid-body guitar called the Esquire. The next electric guitar that Fender
released was the Telecaster and in 1954, the Stratocaster guitar.
The hard-hitting sound of the
electric guitar became the new sound of rock and roll music throughout
60's and continued into the 70's. The electric guitar became an impressive
instrument. Hundreds of well-known bands and guitarist started playing
electric guitars on stage, thus creating a market for affordable electric
guitars.
In the 60's and 70's, electric
guitars were too costly for the average guitarist to purchase, so in the
80's Japanese manufacturers began producing electric guitars that were
affordable and had a good sound. This put demands on American companies
such as Fender and Gibson to produce their own affordable electric
guitars.
