The Gretsch
Guitar has been around for more than 100 years. In 1916 Gretsch began
manufacturing acoustic arch top guitars for
Jazz musicians and acoustic flat tops for Country musicians. Gretsch was the
first guitar company to introduce custom color finishes.
In the 50s Gretsch attracted popular guitar players to endorse their
guitars such as Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy, and Chet Atkins.
Popularity and success continued for Gretsch in the early 60's when George
Harrison, who was with The Beatles at the time,
started playing Gretsch guitars.
In 2002, a deal was made with Fender where Fender would take control of the
manufacturing and distribution of Gretsch. This joining of forces enabled
the Gretsch
Company to continue to grow without sacrificing their ideals. Being involved
with Fender has made the popularity of the Gretsch guitar even bigger today.
Some of the artists who play Gretsch guitars are, Billy Gibson of ZZ TOP, Bo
Diddley, Jimmie Vaughan, Malcolm Young, Brian Setzer, Chet Atkins, Stephen
Stills, and
Malcolm Young with AC/DC.
